Frequently Asked Questions
How is the daily PTO value calculated?
If you enter an annual salary, the daily value is your salary divided by 260 (the standard number of working days in a year). If you enter an hourly rate, the daily value is your hourly rate multiplied by the number of hours in your workday (default 8 hours).
What does PTO days remaining mean?
PTO days remaining is the number of accrued PTO days minus the days you have already used. This is the balance available to take off or, in some companies, to cash out.
Can I use this calculator to estimate PTO payout at termination?
Yes. Many employers pay out unused PTO when you leave. Enter your remaining PTO days as accrued days and set used days to zero to see the total payout value. Note that state laws on PTO payout vary.

Try itUnderstanding PTO Value
Paid Time Off (PTO) has real monetary value that many employees overlook. This calculator helps you understand what each day off is worth in dollar terms, making it easier to decide whether to use PTO or save it for potential payout.
How PTO Value Is Calculated
For salaried employees, daily PTO value = Annual Salary ÷ 260 working days. For hourly employees, daily PTO value = Hourly Rate × Hours Per Day. The total PTO value equals your daily rate multiplied by remaining unused days.
PTO Payout Laws by State
State laws on PTO payout at termination vary significantly. California, Colorado, Illinois, and several other states require employers to pay out accrued unused PTO upon separation. Other states follow company policy. Check your state labor department for specific requirements.
PTO as Part of Total Compensation
When comparing job offers, factor in PTO value. An extra 5 PTO days at a $75,000 salary is worth approximately $1,442 — effectively increasing your total compensation. Some companies also offer unlimited PTO policies, which should be evaluated based on actual usage norms at that company.
